The US government, in possession of the seized luxury motor yacht AMADEA, was denied its request to obtain the right to sell the yacht by a New York court. Amadea, belonging to sanctioned Russian oligarch Suleyman Kerimov, was seized as it was docked in Fiji in May 2022, following the U.S. sanctions imposed on Russia. Delivering his judgment, Judge Dale Ho. contended that relying on the insurmountable maintenance costs should not act as the sole cause of wishing to sell the yacht, saying “The court is wary of relying solely on maintenance costs to justify sale when those costs represent a small fraction of the value of the res and do not appear to be atypical for the property of this type”
